Physio lead Pilates

As dedicated Sports Physiotherapists, Pilates classes are tailored to suit the needs of each client with their respective injury.  This can vary depending on the Sporting Injury or Postural Problem of the individual, also the level of exercise they already regularly undertake, and the type of sport. The classes are held in small groups of 4 so that each individual can have close attention from the therapist and ensure that exercises are being done correctly. There is an exercise that can benefit almost everybody when applied correctly; Pilates.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph Pilates was born in Greece but developed the practice in the USA and UK. Pilates first named the practice “contrology” as the method is largely based on the art of controlled movement. There are many benefits, some of being:

  • Improved flexibility
  • Increased Muscle Strength, Length and Endurance
  • Better Coordination
  • Develop Control and Stamina
  • Full Body Workout
  • Emphasis on Alignment of posture
  • Deep breathing for better lung capacity
  • Improved Coordination and Balance
  • Stronger back
  • Reduced Back Pain
  • Better Sports and Spinal Health

As well as the clear health benefits of regular Pilates, you will also sculpt a toned body shape, with flat abs, toned buttocks and thighs, strong back and defined arms. Pilates is renowned for it’s fitness benefits.

How does Pilates work?

The Pilates system is modifiable depending on your level and condition, goals and limitations. Intensity is normally increased over time as you develop strength in the areas above.

Best reflected in Pilates’ wisdom: “You will gain more strength from a few energetic, concentrated efforts than from a thousand listless, sluggish movements” – Pilates is about concentrating on controlling movement and posture and thus precision and economy of movement becoming second nature.

Physiotherapist lead Pilates classes, that we offer from our Sydney CBD clinic, are designed to develop strength in otherwise weaker areas and healthy habits top to toe. Our expert Physio will guide you in achieving neutral alignment in your posture – which is vital for back health and reduction in back pain, neck pain, hip pain, headaches and many more common symptoms.

What to expect

Our Physio lead Pilates classes are ideal for Sydney CBD office workers – the remedy to sedentary office posture and the pain that goes with it. Learn valuable exercises you can replicate from work and home and gain strength and agility through regular sessions at our Physio clinic.

During a Physiotherapy Pilates class, you will work core muscles of the abdomen,  back, hips, glutes and legs as well as lengthening through the upper body and spine. Key engagement of these muscles develops a foundation for strength and correct, controlled movement, day to day.

The exercises are slow and controlled, not aerobic, yet you can often work up a sweat focussing on the control of infrequently used muscle groups! So dress in comfortable, work-out clothes, bring a water and towel and expect to need shower afterwards. Pilates is normally conducted in bare foot, on a mat, to give the feet the chance to stretch and strengthen to their full potential.

Our classes are in small groups, so you get the personal dedication of our expert Pilates instructors. Most of the exercises are mat based, many with aids, such as resistant bands, to help you develop strength and length in the muscles. A small class will circulate using our Pilates Reformer – a versatile piece of equipment designed to help you get the most out of your Pilates work-out.

One on one Clinical Pilates classes are also available, have the personal attention of one of our advanced Physiotherapist Pilates teachers.

So if you are experiencing back pain, poor posture, muscle fatigue, a lack of flexibility or strength, contact out Sydney CBD clinic today for a Physio lead Pilates class.
