Tom’s Story

Thomas Wyer Physiotherapist SydneyOur Head Sydney Physiotherapist and Practice Owner – Thomas Wyer – tells his story on how he, and Physico City Physiotherapy, came to be.

In light of the fact that it was World Physiotherapy day this week on the 8th September, I thought I would take this chance to tell my story of how I became involved in this profession.

Let me take you back to early High school, I had just attempted to leap a full flight of stairs in hopes of curtailing a very agitated pursuer. In my attempt I failed to clear the last step and ended up in the nurses office with a fractured left fibula. 4 weeks later I was released from my plaster cast and was free to re-enter the playground. But alas my left foot was but a foreign object to me and under my doctors guidance I was ordered to the Physiotherapist.

I entered the Physiotherapy clinic for the first time which was both a mixture of intrigue and suspicion. I was guided through my rehabilitation by my Physio of which I am still in contact today. Between the two of us we were able to restore strength and vitality to my left leg and I was back playing bullrush with the other students in no time at all.

This first encounter was enough to gain my interest and fitted my criteria for future employment perfectly, which included a science based profession, health and fitness related and not sitting at a desk.
So I knuckled down, studied hard, ranked in the top 5% in my HSC and gained entry into a 4 year university course at Sydney University. It was everything I had hoped and more. Live cadaver studies, sports coverage, hospital experience and a deep understanding of the human body.

It has been a steep learning curve and I continue to learn each day as the scope for this profession is so vast.

I have found my passion for physiotherapy in the treatment of sports injuries and spinal pain. Every patient who walks through the door will have their own set of problems and dysfunction for which I will need to locate and work out an individual solution for them. It is like a little crime-solving process for each patient for which I must find the perpetrator and then outsmart him!

My favourite part of the day is when I am able to really change a person’s lifestyle for the better. Whether that be by reducing their pain, improving their performance or even just teaching them how to walk freely again.

I have recently returned to University part-time to complete my Masters in Sports Physiotherapy which has given me access to the latest research and many like minded professionals in my field. Each day presents with new challenges and I am excited to see what the future has in store for me.

Tom is available most days from the Sydney CBD Physio (Physico) clinic within Hyde Park Medical Centre on Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney.
